  • How did you become a Castaway?

Alex: Have donated to OB (greatest XC coach ever) for a few years. Last year, my son swam in Key West to fundraise for the group and this year I decided to get more involved. After a trial ride with Javi Hermida (and not crashing my bike or falling off in exhaustion) here I am.
Marta: I’ve met a lot of castaways over the years and it turns out they’re not so sketchy, so I said, sign me up! Especially for a run!

  • Why are you a Castaway?

Alex: Good cause and good people.
Marta: Because my son and husband have participated before, and I can’t be left behind! (I’m not competitive…)

  • What is your "essential gear" to be a good Castaway?

Alex: A spare tire and lots of Advil.
Marta: I’m not sure yet, I’ll tell you what I recommend after… it’s my first time

We’ve been married for 23 years and live with 17 year-old son Mateo and our dog Lucy. Our son is about to take off to college in August and we will be empty-nesters! Alex is one of four siblings and Marta is one of three siblings and ALL of our family (12 nieces and nephews) live within a few miles of each other here in Miami. Never a dull moment.

  • Where are you from? Both of us are born and bred Miamians; 305 till we die.

  • Favorite music/artists:

Alex: Very eclectic. From AC/DC to Jack Johnson to Gente de Zona to anything in between, heavy on the rock and folk.
Marta: Also very eclectic – there is very little that I won’t listen to. My running list is weird!

  • Favorite movies/genre:

Alex: Classic 80s and 90s movies, documentaries, sci-fi and fantasy (the nerdier the better)
Marta: Love Actually is one of my favorites, so romantic comedies I guess! (Definitely not sci-fi or fantasy).Favorite books: I will read anything and everything, but has to be a physical book I can hold in my two hands! We have an embarrassing number of books.

  • Favorite books:

Alex: I will read anything and everything, but has to be a physical book I can hold in my two hands! We have an embarrassing number of books.
Marta: I like historical fiction. Lately I have been doing a lot of audiobooks (with a lot of variety – from autobiographies to mysteries to revisiting old classics), mostly because my eyes have apparently gotten old and it’s dangerous and frustrating to read a book at night with my glasses on.

  • Personal Fun Fact:
Alex: I have eaten a fried tarantula (didn’t taste as bad as you’d think)
Marta: My nickname is “Tica” - my grandmother and mom are both called Marta (like me) but my mom’s nickname was Martica and they shortened it to Tica for me. If you’re really my friend, you know me as Tica!

  • How have I helped carry out the CAC mission of funding cancer research and honoring those who have fought the fight? Do our best to raise awareness, raise funds, and support this great organization..
